Home for the Holidays: Celebrating the Season in East Tennessee

Friends enjoying the holidays.

When it comes celebrating the holidays, there’s no place that offers more Yuletide cheer than Knoxville, Tennessee. Maybe it’s the Southern hospitality, festive streets of downtown or endless activities, but there’s something about the area that makes this time of the year feel extra special. While the Rocky Mountains and the Big Apple tend to get all of the credit for winter destinations, a December spent in East Tennessee is one to remember.

The holidays are all about traditions, and Knoxville offers no shortage of festive activities that are cherished by residents of all ages. From the best sweet treats to family-friendly events, there are many reasons we love to call East Tennessee our home for the holidays.

Merry and Bright Bike Ride

A great option for guests of all ages, the annual Tour de Lights is one of the area’s most beloved holiday traditions. Each year in mid-December, participants and spectators alike visit downtown Knoxville for the festive biking parade. Decked out in holiday attire and sporting a light-covered bicycle, bikers complete a 5-mile route through downtown Knoxville. Participants are treated with cookies and hot chocolate at the finish line.

Hug In a Mug

When the weather outside is frightful, there’s nothing more delightful than a cup of homemade hot cocoa. And if you’re in downtown Knoxville, several coffee shops and restaurants serve different variations of the sweet beverage. After enjoying a comforting meal in Market Square, stop by Coffee and Chocolate to enjoy the decadent treat. Conveniently located just off Gay Street, the coffee shop has been a staple for residents since 2005.

Christmas in the Mountains

For family-friendly holiday fun, Dollywood’s annual Smoky Mountain Christmas won’t disappoint. From early November to early January, this spectacular Christmas celebration gives guests their fill of holiday cheer. Live Christmas shows, holiday activities and a visit to Santa Land are included with admission into the park. When the sun goes down, guests can enjoy the spectacular Christmas lights display that makes the park feel truly magical.

Holidays on Ice

Bundle up and break out your best ice-skating moves! During the holiday season, Market Square transforms into a winter wonderland, complete with carolers, decorations and an open-air ice rink. With twinkling lights and holiday tunes, you don’t have to be an expert to enjoy a cold winter night spent ice skating with your sweetie.

Giving Back

The strong sense of community in East Tennessee is present year round, but the spirit of giving truly shines during the holiday season. The generosity of residents reminds us what this time of the year is all about. Through fundraising events and volunteer opportunities, there are endless ways to give back to those in need during the holidays.
